Well, Scouting began in 1907 when Robert Baden-Powell, a Lieutenant General in the British Army, held the first Scouting encampment on Brownsea Island near Poole in England. The Scout Movement grew out of the response to Scouting for Boys, published in weekly parts in 1908 which he based on his experience from the prototype camp on Brownsea. I was in the Curlew Patrol myself!
