This Wednesday is 14 July, National Holiday of France, when we commemorate the Revolution of 1789. The Quiz will take place as usual at the Green Linnet. It might be a good idea to revise the history of the Revolution for the occasion.

Actually, 14th July commemorates the Fête de la Fédération of 1790, NOT the revolution a year earlier...
I was waiting for a smarty-pants to come up with that one!
Reminder:
The French National Holiday of 14 July does indeed commemorate the Fête de la Fédération of 1790. But what was that all about? It was to celebrate the end of absolute monarchy and, yes, the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille!
So if you want to say that we're really celebrating the celebration of the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, rather than celebrating the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille itself, then that's fine by me!
Just saying - in case that comes up in the quiz... ;-)
And let's be honest, freeing 7 people from a prison barely used anymore by that time was less of a milestone in revolutionary terms than the events of 20th June of the same year...
Glad to see you're doing your homework!
Actually, my father (a headmaster and French teacher) is an expert on the French revolution, so I've grown up with it...
Shame he's down south and can't come along tonight...
Do you want to give me a clue as to who you are, Mr/Ms Anonymous?
Maybe after the quiz - I'll feel rather silly if we do really poorly after all this! ;-)
